Where Are The Blueberries?

by Jane H
(Bemidji, MN USA)

I live out in the sticks and there seems to be a grapevine that lets people know when the blueberries are ripe, where they are, and if there are any at all in a particular year.

I am out of the loop. One time I went to a famous blueberry area that is usually packed with cars, and there was not a single person in sight. My aunt and uncle used to pick about 600 quarts every year and sell them. They knew all the good spots.

My mother made blueberry pie but I can't turn out a decent crust, so I make cobbler. I don't have any particular recipe. Each time I make it, I get out a different cookbook. Most cobblers are pretty straightforward. Blueberries are delicately flavored and quite sweet, so I reduce the amount of sugar called for and the results are pretty good. I also make blueberry pancakes and muffins and sauce.

But the best way to enjoy blueberries is raw and with milk or cream.
