Blueberry Picking

by Jamie
(Virginia)

Every summer I look forward to visiting the local “pick your own” blueberry field.

I take gallon zipper bags and fill them as high as I can stand. Blueberries are so expensive in the grocery stores, but by doing the labor yourself you stand to save a lot of money on these little blue gems! The ripe berries fall graciously from their bushes as you gently prod them. Berry by berry you can collect pounds of them easily while enjoying early summer mornings outdoors.

I freeze what I cannot eat in the short-term so I have fresh blueberries year round.

In the wintertime I love pulling out my bag of blueberries to sprinkle a few on piping hot oatmeal – turning it a delicious shade of purple while they thaw.

Frozen berries work perfectly in pancakes, too - they heat to the perfect temperature by the time the pancake batter has cooked.

In my home, just a few trips over the summer to the pick-your-own patch means a whole year of love and homemade blueberry treats.
